What Can Your Blood Tell You About Your Health?
Are you developing a disease? Or do you have strong functioning cells?
Do you know that you have new blood being developed every 90 to 120 days? That means you should do at least 1 to 2 blood tests every year to keep an eye on all the changes your body is going through.
Here is a guide on how often you should get your blood tested and sent to me for review:
- Under 40 years of age – once a year (unless you have diagnosed health conditions)
- 40 to 60 – twice yearly
- 60 to 70 – three times a year
- 80+ – quarterly
5 Crucial blood biomarkers that show you if you’re getting a disease
Cholesterol biomarkers
Are your arteries clear of plaque? Are you developing heart disease but you can’t even feel it? I am happy with you when you have the following results:
- Cholesterol – I like to see your total between 5.2 and 6.2
- Triglycerides (a marker of how many calories you’re eating) – I like to see you under 1.5 fasting
- HDL (your protective cholesterol) – needs to be up towards 2.0
- LDL (potential atherogenic cholesterol) – needs to be under 3.0 for most people
Inflammation makers
Are your cells and tissue getting damaged? Are you ageing too quickly? Chronic inflammation is the ‘silent killer’ for all of us and causes cellular destruction. I’m happy when I see the following results:
- CRP – I like to see you under 1.0
- ESR – you should aim for under 2
- Homocysteine (inflammation in your arteries) – should be under 7.0
Glucose score
How is your pancreas/insulin handling your the food you eat (carbs, sugar, snacks)?
- If your fasting glucose is over 5.2 then you are developing PRE-diabetes. I like to see it under 5.0
- HBA1c (a measure of your long term sugar control) – should be below 5.2
Thyroid markers
Is your metabolism slowing down? Are you putting on weight for no reason? Do you run out of energy each day?
- TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) – 1.1 is ideal and over 2.0 means your thyroid is getting sluggish and you might be developing underactive thyroid.
Vitamin D biomaker
Vitamin D is fundamental in protecting you from cancers, heart disease, auto-immunity, and diabetes. Vitamin D is a hormone that Australians are very deficient in because of our slip/slop/slap message and not getting enough sun exposure on our skin each day.
- Vitamin D – needs to be up around 150 and even higher for those of you on drug medications to manage health problems.
- If you drop below 100 then you are at risk of accelerated disease progression.
Don’t rely on your GP to evaluate your bloods – send them to me!
Your GP looks at your bloods differently to me – they are looking for disease – and if they don’t find a disease or they see your scores within their ‘range’, then they will call you “healthy” and send you on your way.
There are optimal scores for all your blood biomarkers and I want to help you achieve them for true health. Don’t settle for ‘ok’!
